The University of Kentucky finished what it started two years ago as Tubby Smith announced he was leaving Kentucky to coach the mighty Golden Gophers of Minnesota. Whether Smith was offically fired will be debated but the true cause of Kentucky's decline over the last couple of years. For the record, Smith has the third most wins of any Division One coach in the last 10 years and has been to the NCAA's every year of his tenure. Oh, did I mention that national championship he won?
No, the main reason for Kentucky's demise, if you can call it that, is that Mitch Barnhart, the UK athletic director, has refused to endorse Smith with the boosters or the press. You have to know that this has been used against Smith in the recruiting wars. At a school like Kentucky, recruiting the kids they recruit, this caused a hurdle Smith just couldn't clear. So congratulations to Kentucky, you got what you deserved.
