Last night I was at a work event that ended with a reception. During the reception I listened to the most mind numbing discussion about Religion. It went something like this:
"I just wish I could get something to make me feel good when I go to church. I mean, the church I attend just weighs you down with Bible. I need something to help me get through the week." Another person suggested that this individual go to Bible study after worship to which she replied, "but that would mean giving up a couple of hours. I just need something short and to the point."
I was dumbfounded. Yet, after I thought about it, how many of us feel the same way. We attend worship services to get something not to give something. Our world is so selfish. We expect everything to be about us. True worship is just that WORSHIP. It is upwardly focused on the Father. It is outwardly focused on others. Self comes last.
While I am still disgusted by what I heard, it did cause me to do some real soul searching on why I "go to worship."
