I am the most socially conservative person I know. Therefore, the upcoming election for President is going to be very difficult for me. I look at the pool of Republican contenders and am very discouraged by the current list. John McCain, the most intriguing of the lot, seems to lean to far to the middle. Rudi Juliani is a liberal in conservative clothing and Mitt Romney has changed his position on gay marriage and abortion enough that I don't trust him.
Enter my candidate: Newt Gingrich is the right man for the job. Gingrich is conservative, with strong Christian values. He's very practical and in politics has stayed true to his values. He is not someone I think would be as dogmatic as President Bush but I believe Newt would have the ability to manage domestic issues while having the kahonees to manage International threats.
Newt is not a saint. Far from it. But last time I checked, saint hood is not required for presidency. Newt would have many hurdles to clear before be could win, but at this point, it will be hard for me to support anyone else.
